Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz of the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) has announced a review of the previously established goal of having 10,000 operational electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the country by 2025.
Currently, there are about 1,500 operational EV charging stations, falling significantly short of the initial target set in the Low Carbon Mobility Development Plan 2021-2030, according to Bernama.
While affirming that the government is presently maintaining the original target, Tengku Zafrul disclosed that he and his cabinet colleagues will reassess the feasibility of achieving this goal.
He acknowledged the ambitious nature of the target, citing numerous challenges such as procedural issues involving various agencies, including the Energy Commission, local authorities, and other entities.
The Trade Minister also highlighted the need to streamline the procedures for establishing charging stations due to complaints from companies involved in providing EV charging stations.
Notably, concerns were raised about the prolonged approval period for setting up charging stations, prompting a call for a more efficient and expeditious approval process.
