Once artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled baggage scanners are deployed at all entry points into the country, smuggling will face even greater challenges.
At least 40 of these AI-enabled scanner units are set to be strategically positioned across various states to bolster efforts in detecting and preventing smuggling, according to The Star.
Ribuan Abdullah, assistant director-general (enforcement) of the Customs Department, revealed plans to station these scanners at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as well as in Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Penang, Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak.
He emphasised that the AI technology integrated into these scanners will enhance personnel’s ability to analyse scanned images, facilitating the detection of smuggled items.
The deployment of AI-equipped scanners began at KLIA towards the end of last year, yielding promising results with several arrests and seizures, particularly in drug smuggling cases. Ribuan highlighted the scanners’ capability to analyse images and colours with greater clarity.
Furthermore, plans are underway to acquire additional cargo scanners featuring drive-through multi-view dual-energy systems.
These advanced scanners will be positioned at crucial entry and exit points like Port Klang, bolstering efforts to combat drug smuggling and other illicit activities.
