Bandar Utama City Centre Sdn Bhd, the operator of 1 Utama Shopping Centre, is embracing solar energy to power its operations.

The company has enlisted the services of a unit from Solarvest Holdings Bhd to install solar photovoltaic panels across approximately 273,300 square feet of the mall’s rooftop and carpark. This installation marks the largest on-site deployment of solar panels in a Malaysian mall, according to The Edge Malaysia.

The panels are expected to generate over 5,700 kilowatt-peak of renewable energy to fulfil the mall’s power needs. As of Monday (15 April), the installation of the solar power system is nearing completion.

Lee Li Lian, the senior manager of public relations and sustainability at the mall, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating that shopping malls are known for their high energy consumption, particularly for air-conditioning and lighting.

By integrating solar power, the mall aims to reduce electricity costs and decrease dependence on fossil fuels.

Lee expressed enthusiasm for future projects aimed at further reducing energy consumption and optimizing resource utilisation, emphasising solar energy’s reliability and environmental responsibility.
