In mid-April, the country achieved a nearly 36% 5G adoption rate and an 80.3% service coverage rate in February.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this marks a significant increase from the 12-15% adoption rate recorded in November 2023, according to Bernama.
He also tasked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to discuss tailored 5G packages for undergraduates with service providers.
Besides that, Fahmi revealed that the government plans to launch the second 5G network this week, promising improved coverage and adoption rates.
Additionally, discussions have been held with the Education Ministry to enhance internet provision in schools nationwide. Over 4,000 schools are earmarked for Point of Presence (PoP) projects, aimed at enhancing internet access, especially in rural areas.
This initiative, part of the 12th Malaysia Plan, involves deploying high-speed broadband services to 437,000 premises by 2025, with an allocated budget of RM4.6 billion.
