Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg expresses his hope for the state to eventually have its own satellite, propelled by advancements in the semiconductor industry.
To achieve this goal, Sarawak is currently collaborating with the United Kingdom-based firm Compound Semiconductor Application (CSA) Catapult on chip manufacturing, according to The Borneo Post.
Abang Johari envisions Sarawak launching its satellite, fueled by compound chips developed through this partnership. However, he emphasises that realising this ambition necessitates collective efforts and unwavering commitment.
Highlighting Sarawak’s potential in semiconductor innovation, Abang Johari underscores the significance of the region’s compound semiconductor design, which deviates from conventional silicon-based semiconductors.
He stresses the need for individuals adept in semiconductor technology intricacies, noting that the era of compound semiconductors demands a new calibre of skilled professionals.
Recently, Sarawak SMD’s Semiconductor and CSA Catapult formalised their collaboration with a memorandum of understanding signed in London.
This partnership aims to advance compound semiconductors, enhancing microchip capabilities to power emerging technologies and applications.
