Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that private companies are encouraged to invest in establishing electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities across the country.

He mentioned that currently, there are only a “few hundred” charging facilities nationwide, despite the ambitious goal of reaching 10,000 charging facilities by next year as outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap, according to The Star.

Loke emphasised the necessity of private sector investment to develop these facilities in strategic locations like highways. He expressed hope for increased participation from private entities in this endeavour, stressing that without an adequate number of charging facilities, the adoption of EVs could be hindered.

Loke also attended the launch of EVlution’s nationwide rollout of EV charging stations on Tuesday, 16 April. The initiative is a joint effort involving RHB Banking Group, EVlution, and Mastercard.

This launch signifies the beginning of EVlution’s plan to install approximately 2,000 EV charging stations across the country by 2025.

The goal is to operationalise 100 EV charging bays across Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor by the first half of this year.
