Petronas and CelcomDigi are actively exploring avenues to harness the power of 5G technology to expedite digital transformation and sustainability initiatives within the energy industry.

According to CelcomDigi’s statement, the parties announced their strategic collaboration aimed at investigating potential techno-digital industrial endeavours utilising 5G technology to facilitate ongoing enhancements across Petronas’ operations.

Furthermore, the collaboration will delve into opportunities to incorporate clean energy solutions into CelcomDigi’s suite of enterprise offerings, fostering adoption among Malaysian businesses.

Aadrin Azly, Petronas’ vice-president of group technology and commercialisation, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting its potential to extend the benefits of 5G to both enterprise and broader communities.

“We envision building a robust network infrastructure that’s able to cater to the growing demand for reliable access to high-speed internet within the oil and gas sector.”

Albern Murty, Deputy CEO of CelcomDigi, emphasised that the memorandum of understanding signifies an opportunity to accelerate the modernisation of oil and gas operations through 5G connectivity.

“In the last five years, we have worked closely with Petronas to implement private 4G LTE networks on offshore platforms and test digital use cases.”

He continued, “Together, we have realised practical digital applications for rig operations; for example, what used to be an edge test case of ‘connected rig workers’ is now a must-have to keep rig workers productive and safe.”
