Telecommunications companies (telcos) are anticipated to explore satellite-based internet services directly to mobile devices, enhancing accessibility, particularly in areas lacking conventional internet infrastructure.

Bernama reports that according to the Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, approximately 2.7% of the country’s regions still require basic 4G coverage. The ministry is actively investigating this issue, with a specific focus on satellite technology, aiming for implementation by 2025.

In remote areas devoid of traditional connectivity, the provision of satellite services to devices would ensure ubiquitous internet access, as highlighted by Fahmi: “In a remote area where there is no existing infrastructure, if telcos provide satellite service directly to devices, we can have internet connectivity anywhere.”

The Ministry of Communications and Digital, in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is researching satellite technologies that enable direct connections. Fahmi emphasised that this ongoing research will be a future focal point for the ministry.

Meanwhile, the ministry expects to unveil a second network entity, distinct from Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), to deliver 5G services in Malaysia. This announcement is anticipated after achieving 80% 5G coverage in populated areas.

Fahmi explained that the introduction of the second network would result in a division, with half of the telcos operating under DNB, and the other half under the newly established entity.

This move is intended to stimulate healthy competition among telcos, encouraging them to enhance their services for the benefit of the public.

As of 31 October 2023, 5G coverage has reached 73% of populated areas in Malaysia, with expectations to reach 80% in November.
