The Local Government Development Ministry, in collaboration with the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI), has launched the i-Kitar digital recycling app through the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) to promote recycling within the community.

Deputy Minister Akmal Nasarullah Mohd Nasir announced that they have selected a People’s Housing Project (PPR) scheme for the initial implementation of the app, with plans to expand it to other PPRs based on its effectiveness and efficiency assessment, according to The Star.

Akmal explained that one of the key benefits of the i-Kitar app is its ability to enable users to earn money from recycling. The app is available on Google Play Store.

Additionally, he shared that as of August, a total of 109,701.35kg of recyclable goods, valued at RM32,910.40, had been collected through the Zero Waste Community program in 17 PPRs across the nation.

This program involved 55,344 residents from 13,586 units in various PPRs, including PPR Lembah Subang 2 in Selangor, PPR Hiliran in Kuala Terengganu, PPR Gua Musang in Kelantan, and PPR Tehel in Melaka.

Akmal emphasised that the program not only contributes to solving the waste disposal issue in PPRs but also helps residents generate additional income.

For instance, residents of PPR Hiliran managed to generate RM37,253.20 between 2020 and August of the current year by recycling food waste and items such as cooking oil.
