In February 2023, we reported that the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has announced that Malaysia is set to establish approximately 4,000 EV charging points this year. But it seems that we are nowhere near that target.
According to Bernama, Malaysia continues to face a shortage of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, which is unable to meet the increasing demand. Currently, there are only about 1,000 EV charging stations, falling significantly short of the targeted 10,000 stations by 2025, as stated by Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Chang Lih Kang.
Chang expressed that the incomplete EV ecosystem, primarily due to the inadequate number of charging stations, is causing manufacturers to think twice about entering the market. He shared these remarks during a press conference after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Alibaba Cloud and Agmo Holdings Bhd.
The collaboration between these two digital platforms aims to assist EV users in identifying charging stations and the services offered through the Agmo EV Superapp, which can be downloaded on Android and iOS devices. The app provides a comprehensive integrated system that includes cashless payment methods, navigation assistance, and information about rates at different charging stations, allowing users to make informed decisions.
According to Agmo’s statistics, Selangor has the highest number of charging stations, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Johor.
Chang emphasised that the government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), will implement various programs to develop the local EV industry.
