Kedah is planning to build a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system using magnetic levitation technology in Langkawi.

State Executive Councillor for Industry and Investment, Higher Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah, said the Royal Eco Train Development (RETD) company from South Korea has been chosen to conduct a study on the project, expected to be completed within six months, according to Berita Harian.

He said RETD would collaborate with Kedah Investment Corporation (PKB) and Q-Plex Company to assess the technical, geographical, and economic impacts of the project.

“The findings of this study will determine the length of the line, stations, and related infrastructure, but fundamentally, we are planning to develop this service from the Kuah Ferry Terminal to Pantai Chenang.

“This project will be implemented in phases before being expanded to other tourist destinations in Langkawi so that we can have the best transportation network,” he said.

Haim said the development of the project needs to consider Langkawi’s needs in implementing changes to its transportation system to maintain the island as a tourist destination.

“Projects like this can enhance the development of the tourism industry in Kedah, especially Langkawi, when tourism infrastructure is improved as one of the attractions for tourists.

“RETD plans to develop innovative station buildings as the surrounding areas have the potential to become commercial hubs and housing for the public,” he said.
