Back in November 2022, we reported that Proton plans to launch and produce its own EV by 2027. According to deputy chief executive officer Roslan Abdullah, they have been in talks with potential partners to start the venture. But it seems that Proton is accelerating their EV plan by two years earlier.
The Edge Markets reports that Proton may speed up the introduction of EVs for the Malaysian market from 2027, which was the original timeline, to as early as 2025.
The company is currently working with Geely to identify electric vehicle models that are affordable and practical. This move is in response to recommendations from the Malaysian government’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) to accelerate the project.
Also, we reported that the Malaysian government has set a new target of 1.5 million EVs in the country by 2040, an increase from the previous target of 90,000 EVs by the same year. If Proton can introduce affordable EVs to the market, that target is probably achievable.
