Since the advent of the iPhone and iOS, Apple has maintained strict control over the appearance and behaviour of its operating system.
However, this is set to change with the upcoming release of iOS 18, which is rumoured to grant iPhone users increased authority over the arrangement of Home Screen app icons.
According to reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 18 will bring a “more customisable” Home Screen experience. MacRumors reports that this update is anticipated to offer users additional options for customising their Home Screens, potentially leading to the most significant revamp in several years.
Although app icons are likely to remain constrained within an invisible grid system on the Home Screen to maintain some level of consistency, iOS 18 will allow users greater flexibility in arranging these icons.
The update is expected to enable the creation of blank spaces, as well as the organisation of rows and columns between app icons.
Android users have long enjoyed the ability to freely rearrange apps on their Home Screen. It’s great to see Apple now offering its users more flexibility and options in customising their iPhone experience.
Apple is set to announce iOS 18 at its annual developers conference, WWDC, in June 2024, so we just have to wait and see if this rumour is true.
