Malaysia continues to outperform its regional counterparts in deploying the 5G network, surpassing neighboring countries in terms of network performance, consistency score, and download speed.
According to the latest analysis by Ookla Research, Malaysia’s 5G network has consistently demonstrated strong performance since its launch over two years ago, positioning it as one of the top-performing networks globally.
The country’s median 5G download speed of 451.79 megabits per second (Mbps) exceeds that of neighboring countries such as Singapore (329.73 Mbps), Thailand (129.40 Mbps), and the Philippines (125.14 Mbps).
Ookla emphasised that while the existing 4G network meets users’ daily needs for tasks like browsing and streaming, the significant performance enhancement offered by 5G further enhances the user experience.
To illustrate the magnitude of improvement, Ookla compared 5G download speeds with 4G long-term evolution. The results showed that the lower 10% of 5G speeds are at least five times faster than median 4G download speeds. Additionally, Malaysia’s median 5G download speed of 451.79 Mbps is 12 times faster than that of 4G.
In 2023, 5G availability in Malaysia increased gradually each quarter, rising from 20.9% in Q1 2023 to 27% in Q4 2023. However, despite the steady improvement in 5G availability, Ookla noted that Malaysia’s 5G still lags behind other markets with Singapore reaching 53.8% and Thailand reaching 45.5%.
Furthermore, Malaysia’s 5G network achieved the highest 5G consistency score globally, reaching 97.3%, with other top-ranking countries including North Macedonia (94.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (93.9%).
