According to reports, Sony is in the process of developing a PlayStation 5 (PS5) Pro model, which is anticipated to feature a significantly more powerful GPU, potentially three times faster for certain tasks compared to the current PS5 models.
The YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead asserts having obtained access to a technical overview document for the PS5 Pro, codenamed Trinity. Now, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson states that leaked specifications are accurate, and the console is slated for release during the holiday season of 2024.
Henderson reports that the Pro model is expected to follow the recent PS5 redesign, featuring support for a detachable disc drive. Additionally, it’s suggested that the PS5 Pro might boast system memory operating at 576 GB/s, marking a 28% improvement over the PS5, along with upgraded audio hardware capable of processing more effects.
Furthermore, it’s indicated that the PS5 Pro will share the same CPU as the base PS5, but with a “High CPU Frequency Mode” that can increase clocks up to 3.85GHz, resulting in a 10% performance boost. However, activating this mode may lead to a slight decrease in GPU speed, around 1.5%.
Regarding the GPU, Henderson mentioned that the Pro’s rendering performance is 45% faster than that of the PS5 and offers up to a four times improvement in ray-tracing performance.
Sony is reportedly also in the process of developing upscaling technology, named PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This technology is rumoured to utilise PlayStation machine learning for image upscaling, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR.
It’s speculated that this technology may support upscaling to 8K resolutions in future iterations, aiming to enhance ray tracing performance on the PS5 Pro hardware.
Henderson mentions that Sony’s first-party studios have been testing PS5 Pro development kits since September 2023, with third-party developers gaining access in January 2024.
