As of 31 December 2023, the 5G coverage in populated areas of the country has reached 80.2%, exceeding the targeted 80%, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Following this achievement, Fahmi, who also serves as the Unity Government’s spokesperson, announced in a press conference that the government will soon reveal plans to transition to a dual 5G network model, according to Bernama.

He stated that the Special Task Force on 5G is scheduled to convene on Friday (12 January) to determine the roadmap and direction for the proposed shift. The task force’s decision will be presented to the cabinet.

Fahmi assured that the government will promptly review and announce the transition from a single to dual 5G network coverage. Once the terms agreed upon by the Task Force are met, the implementation of the dual 5G network can proceed.

On 31 May 2023, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed support for transitioning from a single to dual network coverage for the 5G network.

This move is justified by various reasons, including breaking the monopoly held by a single-state run network and facilitating more effective participation and competition.
