Establishing the position of Chief Information Security Officer within each ministry is crucial for effectively addressing the issue of data breaches, particularly in the aftermath of recent incidents such as the breach of the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) database.

According to Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, the responsibility for implementing this change rests with the Chief Secretary, CEOs, and the top leadership of ministries, based on Bernama’s news report.

He highlighted cyber threats as a significant challenge and emphasised the government’s obligation to ensure the security of ministries’ data in the face of evolving cyber risks.

Moreover, Fahmi pointed out the need for the improvement or renewal of various modules within ministries’ websites. This, he explained, underscores the importance of devising a specific plan at the ministry level.

The minister also acknowledged the substantial challenge within the realm of cybersecurity, recognising the increasing complexity of the threats encountered.

The increasing ingenuity and sophistication of hackers’ techniques are a cause for concern, with a growing apprehension that they may exploit artificial intelligence (AI) technology to breach and illicitly obtain sensitive data.
