YTL Power International Berhad (YTL) announced via a press release that they are collaborating with Nvidia to build AI infrastructure that will bring the fastest supercomputers to Malaysia by the middle of 2024.

YTL is set to utilise Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs, the driving force behind cutting-edge AI data centres, and leverage Nvidia AI Enterprise software to enhance the efficiency of AI production.

Within the Nvidia AI Enterprise suite is Nvidia NeMo, a cloud-native framework that facilitates the creation, adaptation, and deployment of generative AI models from any location.

The exceptional capabilities of the H100 GPUs in generative AI are noteworthy, showcasing a remarkable 30X acceleration in large language models (LLMs) compared to the previous GPU generation.

The AI infrastructure will find its home in the YTL Green Data Center Park in Kulai, Johor, a 500 MW facility developed by YTL and distinguished by its exclusive reliance on on-site solar energy.

YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, the telecommunications arm of YTL, will take ownership and oversight of the AI infrastructure, providing AI computing services nationally.

This AI infrastructure is poised to serve as a cornerstone for scientific research and the creation of solutions and applications that will propel Malaysia’s journey toward becoming an AI-driven nation.

Beyond offering eco-friendly and energy-efficient AI infrastructure to scientists, developers, and startups nationwide, YTL is committed to developing AI-specific applications and services.

Notably, YTL intends to employ Nvidia NeMo to tailor and deploy a foundation model for the Malay language, designed to be culturally sensitive to Malaysia’s diverse heritage.

Having our own supercomputing infrastructure and the ability to train talent locally will accelerate Malaysia’s advancement towards being a top AI nation.

This will be the foundation for a digital economy powered by innovative solutions and applications built on our very own sovereign LLM.

Dato’ Yeoh Seok Hong, Managing Director of YTL Power International.

YTL said the first phase of the AI infrastructure is expected to be operational by mid-2024. According to Reuters, this investment deal between YTL and Nvidia is worth USD4.3 billion (~RM20.1 billion).
