Administered by the National Registration Department, the National Digital Identity (Digital ID) project is designed to serve as a means of authenticating individual identities on the Internet or within virtual realms.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that the Digital ID, once established, will function as a secure and reliable digital information platform for accessing verified data. He emphasised its role in creating a secure and adaptable digital environment for online transactions.

To make this happen, the government has assigned MIMOS Berhad, the national research and development (R&D) centre, as the executing agency for the Digital ID, with an initial allocation of RM80 million, according to Bernama.

Anwar announced that the Ministry of Finance will disburse the allocation to MIMOS next week, while the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) will accelerate the program’s implementation.

“I have decided that MIMOS will oversee the Digital ID for Malaysia. There is an urgent need, and there is an allocation approved by the KDN for this purpose.

“I have also received assurance that it can be expedited within three months from now, provided that the government approves the allocation,” the Prime Minister stated.
