Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced the expedited advancement of the National Digital Identity (IDN) development project as a key element within an initiative to accelerate digital transformation in the public sector.
Administered by the National Registration Department, the IDN project is designed to serve as a means of authenticating individual identities on the Internet or within virtual realms.
Anwar highlighted that the IDN, once established, will function as a secure and reliable digital information platform for accessing verified data. He emphasised its role in creating a secure and adaptable digital environment for online transactions.
This statement came following his leadership of the Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council meeting on Sunday (27 August), according to The Star.
Besides that, during the meeting, the Prime Minister confirmed the council’s consensus on executing measures to fortify the startup ecosystem and elevate the engagement of local startup enterprises.
Anwar articulated Malaysia’s aspiration to position itself among the top 20 countries in terms of a thriving startup ecosystem by 2030, with Kuala Lumpur evolving into a pivotal digital and startup hub in the region.
He also underscored that the existing network supporting startup firms involves a minimum of 14 agencies, spanning domains such as financing, product development, marketing, and expertise.
To streamline and optimise the functions of these agencies, the government intends to introduce a “single window” approach, aimed at simplifying operations within the startup ecosystem. An ambitious target of establishing 5,000 startup companies by 2025 has been set.
The Prime Minister committed the government to further expanding digitalisation initiatives across the public sector, solidifying the nation’s progression in the digital realm.
