The WF-1000XM series is Sony’s flagship True Wireless Stereo (TWS) offering. The previous XM4 was released back in June 2021, and after more than two years, the sequel to one of the best wireless earbuds on the market is finally here.
Yesterday, Sony unveiled the WF-1000XM5, which focuses on sound quality and noise cancelling. It features two proprietary noise-cancelling processors, touted as the best in the market. The earbuds also come with a new driver unit called Dynamic Driver X, expanding the sound reproduction range for more subtle details and cancelling noise at lower frequencies.
The XM5 utilises the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QNe2 and Integrated Processor V2 to process 24-bit audio and high-performance analogue amplification, emphasising accurate and organic audio recreation. The earbuds have a rounded design, distinguished from the XM4, with a matte front and glossed edges.
The charging case is also compact and offers up to 24 hours of playback with the case, up to eight hours without. The case can be charged via wired or wirelessly.
Through Sony’s Headphone Connect app, users can access the XM5’s 360 Reality Audio function for an immersive virtual sound stage experience. The earbuds also come with Speak-to-Chat, pausing music during sporadic conversations. Touch controls on the chassis surface allow for pause, play, and noise-canceling adjustments, while head gestures, like nods and shakes, accept or decline incoming calls.
Additionally, the XM5 is equipped with Google Fast Pair for easy connection and pairing, along with built-in Google Assistant functionality. The earbuds have an IPX4 rating, which offers splash-resistant from water.
Pricing and Availability
The WF-1000XM5 is available in two colours: Black and Silver. On Sony’s page, it seems the earbuds are available for a starting price of RM1,299. But, on Sony Store’s page, RM1,399 is the price for both colours.
Either we are mistaken or someone at Sony set the wrong price. Anyway, you can already place your pre-order for the XM5 now and you should be able to get it in early August.
