Early this month, we reported that that Twitter was instituting a temporary restriction on the number of tweets per day that different accounts can read to deter excessive data scraping and system manipulation. Now, the very recently launched Threads is also going to do the same, but for a different reason.
TechCrunch reports that Threads has announced that they have to tighten up on rate limits due to spam attacks. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, explained the issue in a post on the Threads. He noted that the increasing spam attacks require stricter enforcement of rate limits, which may inadvertently restrict the activities of legitimate users (false positives). If users find themselves affected by these protective measures, they are encouraged to inform the team.
The most active Threads users may encounter limitations on their app usage and post viewing. Unlike Twitter’s strict viewable post limits, Mosseri suggests that users reach out if they face this problem.
Elon Musk tweeted in response to the announcement by saying that Threads is copying what Twitter is doing.
In response to Mosseri’s announcement, several individuals have expressed their dissatisfaction with the worsening comment spam on the platform. One person even mentioned that about half of their posts received responses from bots, including those related to gambling or “bait” messages. Another user complained about wasting considerable time blocking bots promoting gambling and crypto sites.
Threads is less than a month old and they are already facing spam and bots. If they don’t get this under control soon, users might stop using the platform.
