Artificial intelligence’s (AI) capabilities in processing vast amounts of data, detecting violations accurately, and providing objective monitoring make it a valuable tool in ensuring road safety and effective traffic management. This is why the government has decided to use it to monitor the motorists.

The Star reports that Transport Minister Anthony Loke has issued a warning, stating that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has started installing CCTV cameras with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to record motorists’ activities at traffic lights.

He emphasised the need for caution, particularly for those who frequently use their phones while waiting for the green light. Loke stated that summons could be issued, leaving no room for excuses.

According to Loke, the installation of the AI violations detection camera system is part of a pilot project aimed at monitoring motorists’ behaviour and is currently underway at specific traffic lights. He mentioned that the system was implemented prior to his tenure as Transport Minister, serving as a proof of concept.

Sarawak has also begun testing a similar system. The Borneo state’s Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin announced that the state has introduced an upgraded AI violations detection camera system. The purpose of this system is to capture evidence of offenses and provide data for policy planning and enforcement.

The project’s proof-of-concept phase, implemented at the accident-prone Merbau-Miri-Pujut traffic light intersection, has already demonstrated promising results within just one week of operation. The data collected during the six-month trial period will be presented to the Sarawak Transport Ministry to determine the subsequent actions, which may involve targeting enforcement measures based on real-world situations, particularly concerning unruly drivers and accident-prone areas, as stated by Lee.
