Back in late February 2023, we reported that the government is considering whether to proceed with the Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) 5G rollout model, which is a Single Wholesale Network (SWN).
And there were rumours that Celcom, Digi, Maxis, and U Mobile or collectively known as the “CDMU”, are trying to establish another network for 5G rollout, effectively seeking to reintroduce the dual wholesale network (DWN) that was previously rejected by the government. Now we have more news that the government is planning to move ahead with another 5G model, away from DNB.
According to Reuters, four sources informed them that Malaysia is considering the introduction of a second 5G network next year to increase competition and break up monopolies.
The current 5G roll-out by state agency DNB has faced delays due to industry concerns over pricing and transparency, as well as fears that a government-run network would result in a nationalised monopoly.
DNB has claimed that having a single 5G network in Malaysia would result in lower costs, increased efficiency, and faster infrastructure development.
The Communications and Digital Ministry stated that no final decision has been taken on the matter of introducing a second 5G network and “the matter is still under review”.
The plan for a second network is contingent on DNB and mobile operators meeting the government’s target of 80% 5G coverage in populated areas by the end of 2023. A proposal on the plan is expected to be submitted to the cabinet soon according to Reuters’ sources.
