The government is targeting 80% 5G coverage by the end of 2023 and so far, it has reached more than 50% in populated areas.

In a news report by Malay Mail, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has set a target to provide 5G network coverage to a total of 178 locations in Terengganu this year. According to the Terengganu MCMC director, Zahari Ismail, 64 5G sites have been completed, and the implementation has reached 36% so far.

The 5G services have already been made available to users in four districts: Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus, Dungun and Kemaman. The original plan was to launch 5G in Terengganu in 2023, but it has been brought forward to the fourth quarter of 2022.

Regarding the 4G network coverage, it has reached 97.42% in populated areas in Terengganu, which exceeds the national 4G network penetration rate of 96.92% for the fourth quarter of 2022. However, the Terengganu MCMC still needs to focus on improving 4G coverage in the three districts with the lowest percentage of coverage: Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Setiu.

To improve the quality of internet coverage for residents, the Jendela Phase 1 towers have been constructed. 46 out of 65 new towers have been completed, and 15 of them are already operational. Five towers are in Besut and Hulu Terengganu each, three towers in Setiu, and two towers in Marang.

The MCMC is also analysing and identifying locations that have yet to receive 4G coverage in Terengganu, based on complaints received, and they will be recommended for the Jendela project in the next phase to ensure that 100% internet coverage is achieved in populated areas by 2025.
