X (formerly Twitter) is making another big change to the platform by hiding “Likes” from public view.

The company’s director of engineering, Haofei Wang, stated that the initiative is designed to safeguard the public image of users.

He stated that they don’t want users to feel discouraged from liking “edgy” content and users will be able to like whatever content they want on the platform without worrying who might see it.

Later on, the company’s senior software engineer Enrique Barragan stepped in and provided further explanation on how this works.

X Premium users gained the ability to make their likes private in September 2023, and Haofei’s remarks indicate that this feature may soon become a default option for all users on the platform.
