Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil commended Telegram’s operator for actively collaborating with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to oversee the platform.

Fahmi highlighted the cooperative efforts in addressing online security concerns, such as scams and online gambling, by swiftly removing related content or channels, as reported by Bernama.

However, he acknowledged the challenge of new channels emerging after the closure of others, attributing it to the ingenuity of online gambling operators.

To address this issue, Fahmi emphasised ongoing discussions on implementing more sustainable approaches to combat scams and online gambling, not only on Telegram but also across various social media and messaging applications.

Beyond security matters, Fahmi pointed out that Telegram is also cooperating in removing content that violates the Copyright Act, citing the Layang Layang Perkahwinan television series as an example.

On 2 March, Fahmi met with Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in Dubai and talked about various topics related to the social media platform, which has around 15 million users in Malaysia.
