Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, the cloud technology subsidiary of Alibaba Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Universiti Malaya (UM) to enhance local expertise in cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and data centre management.

The collaboration involves joint workshops and internship programs facilitated through the Alibaba Cloud Academic Empowerment Program (AAEP), according to The Edge Malaysia.

As part of AAEP, UM students and faculty will gain access to 300 online and offline certification courses and training sessions offered by Alibaba Cloud Academy, covering topics from AI to database management at the Alibaba Cloud Skill Centre located in UM’s main library.

Additionally, students will benefit from Alibaba Cloud Academy’s cloud computing and e-learning resources, including seminars, lectures, and interactive workshops.

Alibaba Cloud has also introduced an internship program called Future Star, a paid initiative lasting three to six months in collaboration with UM.

The program offers positions such as business development manager, solution architect, and customer success manager, providing students with practical experience. The interns will work alongside a mentor who guides them throughout the program.

This initiative aligns with Alibaba Cloud’s localisation strategy, aiming to develop talent within the Malaysian cloud industry, fostering local hiring. Completion of the program grants students assessment and certification, with potential opportunities for immediate employment at Alibaba Cloud if suitable positions are available.

Sean Yuan, Alibaba Cloud’s regional general manager for Indonesia and Malaysia, highlighted the launch of the skill centre as a crucial step in building a local presence and nurturing new talent in cloud and technology.
