Nvidia, in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, has, for the first time, recognised Huawei as a prominent competitor across various categories, notably artificial intelligence (AI) chips.

The California-based company highlighted Huawei’s involvement in supplying chips tailored for AI, encompassing graphics processing units (GPUs), central processing units (CPUs), and networking chips. Additionally, Nvidia acknowledged Huawei’s role as a cloud service provider with its own chip designs, according to Reuters.

Huawei, in direct competition with Nvidia’s AI chip offerings, introduced the Ascend series of chips, with its flagship 910B chip positioned as a primary rival to Nvidia’s A100 chip, introduced approximately three years ago.

Analysts estimate the value of China’s AI chip market to be around USD7 billion (~RM33.4 billion). Notably, in the previous year, Huawei received a chip order from Chinese search giant Baidu, anticipating stricter U.S. government regulations on the export of advanced AI chips to China.

Nvidia also identified other formidable competitors, including Intel, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Broadcom, and Qualcomm.

Additionally, the chip company highlighted major players in the cloud computing sector, such as Amazon and Microsoft, as part of the competitive landscape.
