Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to promoting the growth of the electric vehicle (EV) industry and the wider adoption of green technology in Malaysia.

This aligns with the goals outlined in Budget 2024, which aim to accelerate EV acceptance and green technology usage across various sectors, according to Bernama.

Anwar stressed the potential of EVs in addressing climate change, as the automotive sector contributes significantly to global emissions.

He highlighted the economic and environmental advantages of transitioning to EVs, citing reduced fuel and gas costs and substantial greenhouse gas emission reductions.

Anwar called for collaboration between the government, industry stakeholders, and the public to create a cleaner and more sustainable future for Malaysia.

The government’s commitment is evident in its policies, such as import duty exemptions for locally assembled EV components until December 2027, excise tax and sales tax exemptions for completely knocked down (CKD) EVs, and extended completely built-up (CBU) duty exemptions until December 2025.

Additionally, tax deductions of up to RM300,000 are offered for companies leasing non-commercial electric vehicles, and road taxes for EVs are waived until 31 December 2025.

The government also plans to establish 10,000 EV charging stations in Malaysia by 2025, with 1,246 operational public charging stations already in place.

The Prime Minister stated that the government is committed to both the global climate agenda and the well-being of the nation’s citizens.
