Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Liew Chin Tong, announced that the government is actively developing a national standard for battery-swapping to drive the advancement of the electric vehicle (EV) industry.

This effort encompasses safety, functionality, and battery-swapping technology, ensuring that the technology remains safe, standardised, high-quality, and environmentally friendly, according to Bernama.

Liew further mentioned that the creation of this standard involved various government agencies, including the Road Transport Department, the Malaysian Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute, as well as industry participants, particularly electric motorcycle manufacturers and higher education institutions.

The development process takes into consideration existing international standards such as those set by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission, and the United Nations Regulation.

He added that the national standard for battery-swapping is expected to be finalised and officially adopted next year.

According to Liew, NanoMalaysia Bhd has engaged in discussions with the Motorcycle and Scooter Assemblers and Distributors Association of Malaysia, with both parties agreeing to collaborate in establishing a consortium to standardise Battery Storage System (BSS) technology.

Liew emphasised that the government actively seeks opportunities for strategic cooperation with EV industry players from around the world, including aspects related to battery-swapping.

Through the National EV Task Force and the National EV Steering Committee, the government remains dedicated to designing and executing programs and initiatives that will drive the development agenda of the country’s EV industry.
