Selangor and Penang’s penetration rates for public sector digital payments reached 90% so far with Perlis and Kedah reaching 60% and 80% respectively, according to PayNet.

The company’s Senior Director of Government Digitalisation Firdaus Ghani said the penetration rates can be attributed to both state governments committing to encourage cashless payment transactions.

Berita Harian reported that Perak recorded a 49% public sector digital payment penetration rate while Johor is over 50%.

We have been working with the Ministry of Finance since 2019 to run the Cashless Boleh Campaign to support the development of digital payments in the public sector. Based on the 20 agencies involved with us, the digital payment penetration rates reached 80%. The agencies involved collect more than 70% of the Federal Government’s income such as the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary General (Management) of the Ministry of Finance, Datin Rashidah Mohd Sies said the government remains focused on increasing efficiency and transparency in the public sector.

She said both the public and private sectors’ cooperation are important to advance the nation’s cashless payment agenda.

The increase in efficiency and convenience enjoyed by the people in terms of time and cost when dealing with the government without cash is very significant.

Government agencies along with PayNet recently rolled out the Cashless Boleh 3.0 campaign with three important objectives, namely reaching an overall public sector digital payment penetration rate of 80%.

The campaign rewards cashless or cheque transactions at selected government agencies with cash prizes when Malaysians pay using their MyDebit ATM card, DuitNow QR at the counter or via internet banking using JomPAY, FPX or DirectDebit.

The State Government of Selangor and Penang managed to pass 80% digital payment penetration and eight public sector ministries and agencies that were previously based on cash transactions have achieved payment penetration full digital.

Reports state that PayNet is negotiating with the Ministry of Finance to get approval to hold the Cashless Boleh 4.0 Campaign which will allow it to start this December.
