Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has become the first company in Malaysia to adopt a 5G private network for enterprise use at its Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU) in Melaka.
The Edge reported that the private network is expected to optimise internal operations and induce industry-wide change. The move is also reportedly supported by the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, in applauding the move, said on Facebook that the government introduced the Ekonomi MADANI framework to elevate the nation’s economic status.

MCMC wants to encourage more companies to adopt private 5G
It’s also reported that MCMC is working closely with mobile service providers to deploy more private 5G standalone networks which will foster more use case development across industries in the country.
As of September, the network coverage for 5G is around 70.2% while subscriptions for the network is around 2.49 million or a penetration rate of 7.4%.
Malaysia recently received recognition from independent analytics companies such as Opensignal and Ookla, for its efforts in 5G connectivity.
Reports also state that the country is on track to achieve its target of 80% coverage in populated areas by the end of 2023.
