You can use your credit and debit card to pay for tolls soon as several highway operators in the Klang Valley have already started installing open payment terminals at toll plazas.

Berita Harian reported that the implementation is scheduled to begin in stages this September and the open payment system will be tested on several highways in the Klang Valley.

It is expected to make it easier for users to pay tolls when it is operational soon.

More options for users

Reports state that the new payment facility complements existing payment services including Touch ‘n Go (TNG), SmartTAG and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), giving highway users more payment options.

Taking the concept used by several parking operators in major cities that offer various payment methods other than TNG, highways in some locations have also begun to offer similar options to highway users.

It is also reported that several highways are currently maintaining open payment terminals located next to TNG terminals in certain lanes before the full implementation this September.

Currently, a total of 12 highways will implement open payment trial periods where users can make open payments:

  • Sungai Besi Expressway
  • New Pantai Expressway (NPE)
  • Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway
  • Guthrie Corridor Expressway
  • Penang Bridge
  • Butterworth–Kulim Expressway
  • Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP)
  • SPRINT Expressway
  • Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas)
  • SMART Tunnel
  • Maju Expressway
  • Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE)

MLFF to be implemented in stages before 2024

Last April, Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced that the open payment system for 12 highways is expected to start in September of this year.

DUKE Highway was selected as the second location for the implementation of Proof of Concept (POC) after Sungai Besi Highway to evaluate the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system before it is implemented on all highways in the country.

The implementation of this open toll payment system, according to Alexander, is the initial preparation for the transition towards MLFF before it is fully implemented in phases no later than the third quarter of 2024.

He said the effort is expected to provide an opportunity for the government, the concessionaire companies and the parties involved to identify and resolve all issues that can hinder the implementation of the MLFF.
