5G is a major step forward in mobile connectivity. It offers a number of advantages over previous generations of wireless technology, and it will enable new applications that were not possible before. As 5G continues to be deployed, it might have a profound impact on the way we live, work, and play.
The Star reports that telecom companies are preparing to make a series of positive announcements regarding the deployment of 5G networks in the country before the end of this month, as revealed by Fahmi Fadzil, the Minister of Communications and Digital.
Speaking at the monthly assembly of the Communications and Digital Ministry on 20 June, Fahmi disclosed that the telcos have already finalised access agreements to facilitate the provision of 5G services. He expressed optimism that by the end of June, important announcements would be made jointly by the telcos, Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), and equity holders.
Fahmi also highlighted that as of May, Malaysia’s 5G network coverage had reached an impressive 62.1%, which he deemed a noteworthy achievement. To ensure compliance with established guidelines, a meeting of the 5G task force, co-chaired by Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican and KKD secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, was convened on the same day.
Earlier statements attributed to Fahmi indicated that the government intends to implement a dual 5G network once the ongoing rollout under DNB attains 80% coverage in populated areas. He emphasised that this transition to a dual network model would be carried out in accordance with internationally accepted practices of offering multiple networks.
