A couple of days ago, the Prime Minister said the government will review the monopoly of Touch ‘n Go (TNG) in collecting highway tolls due to the lack of innovation and advancement in the system, despite operating for more 20 years. The government also announced drivers will have the ability to use any digital payment provider to pay for highway tolls, not just TNG. Now, they have just announced which highways will embrace this new system.
Free Malaysia Today reports that according to Alexander Nanta Linggi, the works minister, an open payment system will be implemented in five highways, including the Sungai Besi, New Pantai Expressway, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway, Guthrie Corridor Expressway, and the Penang bridge, by September.
The ministry has been in discussions with the highway concessionaires to move forward with the implementation of the system. The open payment system will allow tolls to be paid using debit or credit cards and is a step towards the multi-lane fast flow (MLFF) system.
The MLFF will allow for the open system to be used on all tolled roads in Malaysia, creating competition and offering more payment options for road users. The MLFF proof-of-concept will take place in October, with the final location to be determined soon.
The implementation of the MLFF will be done in stages, with the latest to be completed by the third quarter of 2024, the works minister said.
