YouTube is constantly experimenting with new features. Some of the features are reserved for YouTube Premium subscribers, while others are for global users. Today, we have two new features to talk about: Stable Volume and Gesture-enabled 2x playback speed.
Stable Volume
A Reddit user uncovered an unannounced setting called “Stable Volume,” which YouTube has now confirmed is undergoing testing with users worldwide.
Stable Volume aims to equalise audio levels across YouTube videos, addressing variations in volume that some videos may exhibit. Although YouTube did not officially announce the feature’s release, several users noticed it appearing in their app.
YouTube stated that they are experimenting with a new listening control feature to provide users with a more consistent audio experience while watching videos.
Gesture-Enabled 2x Playback Speed
This new feature is allowing users to enable the 2x speed with a simple gesture.
Right now, to adjust the Playback speed on mobile, users need to tap the video window to display controls and then press the settings gear located in the top-right corner. Once the menu appears toward the bottom of the screen, users can select their desired speed. In total, this process involves four steps.
With this new feature, users can now adjust the playback speed to 2x by simply performing a “long press” anywhere on the video player while watching a video. Once the long press is executed, a notification stating “Playing at 2x speed” will appear at the top of the window.
YouTube Premium subscribers can play with this new experimental feature until 13 August 2023.
