Cyberbullies often use social media, messaging apps, or online forums to spread rumors, engage in name-calling, or share offensive content about their victims. The impact of cyberbullying can be devastating, leading to anxiety, depression, and even suicide in some cases. This is why the government is taking an active stance in punishing cyberbullies who drive individuals to the point of contemplating suicide.

FMT reports that in a statement to the Dewan Rakyat, Deputy Law and Institutional Reform Minister Ramkarpal Singh announced that cyberbullies can now face charges for influencing or abetting the suicides of children and mentally disabled individuals. The amendment to the Penal Code aims to protect the victims of cyberbullying.

Ramkarpal highlighted that cyberbullies who encourage victims to take their own lives using online platforms will be investigated if sufficient evidence is found. The amended Sections 305 and 306 of the Penal Code will specifically address the actions of cyberbullies and their involvement in suicide attempts by children and the mentally disabled.

Section 305 of the law states that any individual who aids or abets the attempted suicide or suicide of a child or a person lacking mental capacity may be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison and fined upon being found guilty.

Similarly, according to Section 306, anyone who abets a suicide or an attempted suicide can be liable for up to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine upon conviction

While the government intends to take action against those who encourage suicide attempts, Ramkarpal clarified that individuals who attempt suicide themselves will not be penalised. Additionally, he emphasised that the punitive measures against those influencing these vulnerable groups will be strengthened as part of the amendment.
