State elections in six states; Selangor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, and Penang, will take place 12 August 2023. While official campaigning will only start 29 July, unofficial campaigning has begun, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) expects there will be a surge of internet traffic as the election date draws near.

In order to optimise network capacity, service coverage, and enhance the quality of experience for the upcoming state elections in six states, MCMC will assume oversight of telecommunications companies (telcos) according to Bernama.

MCMC Corporate Communications stated that the elections are expected to lead to an increase in traffic and a higher demand for coverage, particularly on polling day.

Nevertheless, MCMC assured that it is actively managing telecommunications coverage and services to ensure they are in optimal conditions. The commission also mentioned that MCMC’s state directors in the respective states will be directly involved in supervising and monitoring the service coverage provided by telcos, ensuring it meets satisfactory levels and remains fully prepared to address any related issues that may arise.
