In today’s digital age, internet connectivity has become an integral part of our daily lives. From communication and entertainment to work and productivity, almost everything we do relies on being connected to the internet. Even activities like playing single-player games, which traditionally didn’t require an internet connection, now often come with online components. The evolving landscape highlights the increasing dependence on internet connectivity and its pervasive role in shaping our modern experiences.

The Edge reports that the demand for internet bandwidth in Malaysia has reached unprecedented levels, according to the Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX). Established in 2006 as an initiative under the Malaysian Communications Multimedia Commission (MCMC), MyIX serves as Malaysia’s leading internet exchange.

MyIX reported a record peak of 2.1 TeraBits per second (Tbps) last month, marking a significant increase from the 588 GigaBits per second (Gbps) recorded in May 2020 during the first movement control order (MCO). This surge in demand indicates a substantial increase in digital activity within the country.

Chiew Kok Hin, MyIX chairman, emphasised that the increase in internet bandwidth is due to the integration of the internet and digital economy into Malaysian lifestyles and work cultures, particularly in the context of the prevailing hybrid work model. He also stated that digitisation is gaining momentum in Malaysia, and the strong demand for internet bandwidth is a positive sign.

Chiew further explained that as Malaysia progresses, there will continue to be a surge in demand for internet bandwidth. This growth will be primarily driven by the rapid expansion of video conferencing and traffic, as well as the proliferation of large-scale display technologies that require substantial bandwidth to support increasing video traffic.

The soaring demand for internet bandwidth in Malaysia can be attributed to various factors, such as the rise of online streaming services, remote work and telecommuting arrangements, and increased reliance on cloud-based technologies. In response to this demand, local internet service providers and global players are continuously upgrading their ports to ensure fast and reliable internet connectivity.

Chiew encouraged hosting companies, universities, and enterprises to join MyIX, as the exchange operates on a “network effect” principle, where more participants result in better overall internet connectivity throughout Malaysia.

MyIX also added that they have installed the Ookla Speedtest server under its network. This allows users to conduct speed tests and monitor their internet connection quality, with over 24,000 tests conducted since April 2023.

MyIX said they remains committed to providing robust internet connectivity, continuously upgrading and expanding its network infrastructure to meet the escalating demand for bandwidth.
