If everything is proceeding without hiccups, Malaysia is currently well on track to reach the 80% 5G coverage goal before the end of the year.
According to The Star, Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that the deployment of the 5G network in Malaysia has reached a coverage of 62.1% in populated areas as of 31 May, with a total of 5,058 5G sites. This indicates a growth of 2.6% compared to the coverage of 59.5% reported at the end of April.
The Communications and Digital Minister stated that the country is making progress towards its objective of achieving 80% coverage of the 5G network in populated areas by the end of this year. The accomplishment of this target will be facilitated solely by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB).
Once the 80% coverage target is attained, the government plans to allow the establishment of a second network and implement a dual wholesale network (DWN) approach, as previously announced. This means that there will be two entities, A and B, involved in the 5G network. Entity A, represented by DNB, will continue working with approximately half of the mobile network operators (MNOs), while entity B will include the remaining MNOs.
Furthermore, Fahmi expressed his appreciation for the leaders of the MNOs for their collaboration and willingness to put aside competitive differences in order to participate in numerous meetings for the benefit of the public.
