It’s important for a country to have good internet services. Firstly, it enables communication and connectivity among individuals, businesses, and institutions. This leads to increased access to information, opportunities, and resources, as well as the ability to collaborate and innovate across geographic boundaries.

Secondly, it facilitates the growth of digital industries, such as e-commerce, online education, and remote work, which can contribute significantly to the country’s economic development.

Additionally, good internet services can improve access to healthcare, government services, and emergency services, enhancing the overall quality of life for citizens. Therefore, if Malaysia wants to remain competitive and thrive, having reliable and high-speed internet services is essential.

According to Malay Mail, the Minister of Communications and Digital, Fahmi Fadzil, expressed the government’s commitment to enhance the quality of internet services for the people in the country.

He stated that the government will prioritise the issue of internet infrastructure to achieve this goal. He emphasised the benefits of a stable and fast internet network, which can enhance the energy, oil, and gas sectors, including Petronas.

Fahmi also mentioned that the government will continue to improve internet services in Malaysia, and efforts will be made to expand coverage and increase internet speed levels nationwide. Currently, only 3% of populated areas lack internet access, according to Fahmi’s recent statement.

He also provided an update to Jendela, the national digital infrastructure plan recently. He reported that by the fourth quarter of last year, fibre connectivity had been installed in 7.74 million premises, exceeding the targeted 7.5 million.

Additionally, the average mobile broadband speed reached 116.03Mbps, surpassing the target of 35Mbps for last year, while 4G coverage in populated areas reached 96.92%, slightly ahead of the targeted 96.9% for Phase 1 of Jendela.

As of February 2023, there were 4,363 5G sites established nationwide, with 54.7% network availability in populated areas. Fahmi said they aim to achieve 80% 5G network availability in populated areas by the end of this year.
