Mixed reality (MR) is a technology that blends virtual and physical realities to create a new form of immersive experience. MR is achieved by overlaying computer-generated graphics onto the real-world environment, enhancing and transforming the user’s perception of reality.
Unlike virtual reality (VR), which creates a completely synthetic environment, MR allows users to interact with digital objects in the real world, enhancing the experience of the physical space. MR technology is being used in a variety of applications, from entertainment and gaming to education and training, and is expected to have a significant impact on how we interact with the world around us in the future.
The two trillion dollar company is eyeing to enter the wearable MR technology market for the first time, and if the rumours are accurate, they will soon reveal its first MR headset.
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is preparing to launch its highly-anticipated MR headset, which was recently presented to the company’s top 100 executives at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. It’s expected to be called the “Apple Reality Pro” or “Apple Reality One”, and may be unveiled at the WWDC 23 event in June. This new product launch is considered to be one of Apple’s most significant in a while.
Gurman said that the headset has been in development for years and has been shown to executives on multiple occasions. The latest preview was a final step before its official launch, and it’s rumoured to be priced at USD3,000 (RM13,197).
The New York Times reports that according to unnamed Apple executives who attended the preview event have revealed details about the device’s design and features. The headset is said to have a ski-goggle design with a carbon fibre frame, and will come with a hip pack that houses its external battery, which can last for a few hours.
The report also mentions dual 4K displays inside the headset and a “reality dial” that allows users to adjust the level of video of their surroundings in real-time. However, the design may not be suitable for users who wear glasses, although Apple plans to offer custom prescription lenses for the displays.
The headset is expected to appeal to artists with its ability to track head and hand movements for use with drawing and design apps. Video conferencing is another key aspect of the device, with a “copresence” app that enables users to socialise in VR. It’s similar to Mark Zuckerberg’s “Metaverse”.
Additionally, the headset will also function as a high-resolution TV and Apple is working with Hollywood filmmakers to provide custom content for it.
