In an effort to make internet as accessible and affordable to everyone, the Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, announced two internet Unity Packages, a mobile prepaid data plan and fixed broadband, for the young people, B40 communities, people with disabilities, senior residents, and veterans of the police and military.
Eligible individuals can already start applying for the mobile prepaid data plan, but the fixed broadband is still unavailable. According to The Star, Fahmi said they are going to announce more information about it on 29 March 2023. He provided no additional details. The fixed broadband Unity Package, which was announced on 2 February 2023, will offer unlimited data at 30Mbps speed for RM69 a month.
Other than that, Fahmi provided an update on Jendela, the national digital infrastructure plan. He reported that by the fourth quarter of last year, fibre connectivity had been installed in 7.74 million premises, exceeding the targeted 7.5 million.
Additionally, the average mobile broadband speed reached 116.03Mbps, surpassing the target of 35Mbps for last year, while 4G coverage in populated areas reached 96.92%, slightly ahead of the targeted 96.9% for Phase 1 of Jendela.
As of last month, there were 4,363 5G sites established nationwide, with 54.7% network availability in populated areas. Fahmi said they aim to achieve 80% 5G network availability in populated areas by the end of this year. A report detailing Jendela’s fourth-quarter achievements is expected to be released later this month.
