Harris Zainul, an analyst at the Institute of Strategic & International Studies, advises the government to address concerns regarding generative artificial intelligence (AI) while leveraging its potential to enhance productivity.
He suggests establishing a task force involving various stakeholders to carefully study and manage the issue. While acknowledging the potential risks of generative AI, he cautions against a knee-jerk reaction that might hinder its productivity benefits, according to FMT.
Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan also urges the government to form a task force to address AI-related challenges, particularly concerning the misuse of AI-generated media for malicious purposes like political manipulation.
Recent incidents, including AI-generated content detected by South Korea’s election commission and a financial scam utilising deepfake technology in Hong Kong, highlight the urgency of proactive measures.
Harris emphasises the importance of understanding the risks posed by AI before considering regulatory changes, suggesting Malaysia has the expertise to manage these challenges effectively.
He encourages the government to engage with skilled individuals to develop strategies for mitigating AI’s risks while maximising its benefits.
