Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) observed a decrease in dropped calls across 4G mobile networks, ranging from 10 to 74%. The reduced rate of dropped calls is attributed to the optimisation efforts of 4G mobile network operators.
Bernama reports that Fahmi credited the success to both the endeavours of 4G mobile network operators in enhancing their networks and the activation of the Call Re-establishment (CRE) function for LTE700 coverage in the 5G network by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) from 21 to 29 December 2023, at all 5G sites nationwide.
A meeting was held on 14 December 2023, involving MCMC, mobile network providers, and DNB, to address the dropped call issue. Subsequently, a workshop was organised to explore effective solutions.
Fahmi and Deputy Teo Nie Ching personally assessed mobile phone call quality during a bus ride from the Parliament Building to the Ministry of Communications in Putrajaya. The test aimed to evaluate the network coverage provided by Malaysian telecommunications service providers, addressing recent complaints.
Notably, the Cellular Service Quality Test, focusing on mobile calls rather than internet calls, recorded no dropped calls during the 45-minute journey.
Fahmi emphasised the government’s commitment to promptly resolving the issue raised by consumers. The audit conducted by MCMC from 1 January to 13 December 2023, reported 1,837 disconnected calls, including those outside coverage areas.
Fahmi assured continued monitoring of the issue throughout the first quarter of 2024, with periodic reports to be provided
