In the midst of the restructuring of the Malaysian government, the placement of Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), tasked with developing 5G infrastructure, remains undecided.
The former Ministry of Communications and Digital has split into two, with uncertainty surrounding whether DNB falls under the jurisdiction of Fahmi Fadzil or Gobind Singh Deo.
Fahmi, now responsible for communications, emphasised that DNB is primarily an infrastructure company and said that “the only thing that’s digital about it is the name”. Discussions regarding its ministry placement are ongoing, according to The Edge Malaysia.
The delineation of responsibilities between the ministries and agencies, such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is still under consideration.
Despite the reshuffling, Fahmi assured that MCMC’s regulatory power in the telecommunications sector remains unchanged.
He refuted claims that the restructuring reflects poor performance and emphasised the importance of ensuring communication access across diverse communities, whether digital or traditional formats.
The Digital Ministry’s focus will be on the digital economy, with agencies like MDEC and MyNIC under its purview.
