In May 2023, WhatsApp introduced Chat Lock as a measure to safeguard users’ more sensitive conversations.

Today, the giant messaging app company is introducing the “Secret Code” feature, offering an additional means of securing these chats and enhancing their confidentiality in cases where someone gains access to your phone or when the phone is shared.

With the secret code, users can now establish a distinct password, separate from their phone unlock code, providing an additional layer of privacy for their locked chats.

An option is provided to conceal the Locked Chats folder from the chat list, ensuring that these conversations can only be accessed by entering the secret code in the search bar.

It’s important to highlight that the use of a secret code is optional and users can choose to have the locked chats visible in their chat list.

To lock a new chat, users can simply long-press on it instead of navigating to the chat’s settings.

WhatsApp said that the secret code feature is beginning its rollout today and will become globally available in the coming months.
