The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD), led by Minister Fahmi Fadzil, is actively researching the use of satellites to enhance the country’s communication system, in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Fahmi expressed that achieving the ‘Where there’s a road, there’s an internet’ policy is possible through the implementation of satellite technology in partnership with telecommunications companies, according to Bernama.

According to Fahmi, multiple companies are currently conducting research on satellite technology for use as telecommunications towers, with results expected in the next two years.

Furthermore, Fahmi highlighted a successful collaboration between MCMC and telecommunications companies to address the issue of ‘naked’ towers (towers without telecommunications equipment) in Sarawak, involving 600 towers under the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA).

Despite the substantial cost involved, he emphasised that such collaborations demonstrate the effectiveness of joint efforts between MCMC and telecommunications companies, suggesting a potential model for application in other states after thorough discussion and consultation.
