Malaysia and Japan signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) to strengthen their bilateral relationships by intensifying collaboration in broadcast, information and communication technology (ICT), postal, and courier services.
The MOC was signed between the Ministry of Communications and Digital of Malaysia and Japan’s Ministry of Domestic Affairs and Communications, according to a news report by Bernama.
Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who spearheaded this initiative, emphasised that the MOC represents an extension of a bilateral meeting that took place in February during the ASEAN Digital Ministers Meeting in the Philippines.
It aims to enhance cooperation between the two ministries, fostering the exchange of expertise and information in the fields of broadcast, ICT, postal, and courier services.
Fahmi views the MOC as a pivotal step towards strengthening the existing relationship between the two countries, particularly between their respective ministries, with a focus on areas such as cyber security, the development of 5G networks, and the digital economy.
Furthermore, Fahmi announced that a comprehensive series of discussions would take place following a Special Meeting in Tokyo next month, coinciding with Japan’s 50-year association with ASEAN.
He highlighted the importance of the MOC in enabling Malaysia to learn from Japan, especially in areas where Japan has already implemented successful initiatives, such as using internet satellites as a backhaul for telecommunications in various locations.
Malaysia is eager to adopt such technologies for implementation, leveraging Japan’s extensive experience in this regard.
